Producers encouraged to monitor and report signs of bird flu

With avian influenza (bird flu) currently affecting bird populations in parts of Australia, Biosecurity Week is a timely reminder of the role producers can play in protecting Australia’s red meat and livestock industry. 

While the Australian red meat industry is unlikely to be significantly impacted by the recent arrival of migratory birds carrying the H5N1 virus, maintaining strong on-farm biosecurity remains important. 

Landholders and red meat producers can support the national response by monitoring their properties for sick or dead birds, native wildlife or animals. It’s also important to keep a close eye on working dogs and pets, particularly around wild birds, and prevent them from interacting with sick or dead birds or other wildlife. Bird flu can be difficult to identify, and some infected animals may show few or no signs of disease. 

If you see sick or dead animals, do not approach or touch them. Where possible, take a photo or video from a safe distance and report the incident to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
