Building a stronger goat industry starts with you

Australia’s goat industry is gearing up for a major step forward in emergency animal disease preparedness and industry members from across the supply chain are invited to take part.

The newly launched Goat Liaison-Livestock Industry (LLI) Network Project has been developed to strengthen the goat sector’s ability to respond during an emergency animal disease (EAD) event.

Industry members from the fibre, dairy, hobbyist, farmed meat and rangeland sectors are encouraged to join and help ensure the industry's voice is represented during an emergency response.

The initiative will provide training and ongoing support to a dedicated group of goat industry representatives who will work alongside government and broader industry stakeholders when an EAD response is activated.

The project will be formally introduced to the goat industry through an initial webinar hosted by GICA in October.

Why LLIs are needed?

EAD events can have significant impacts on livestock industries, including movement restrictions, biosecurity measures, market disruptions and operational challenges.

During these events, Liaison-Livestock Industry (LLI) officers play an important role in ensuring the goat industry's interests are represented, and that sector-specific needs and considerations are incorporated into response activities.

For a sector spread across vast rangelands, remote regions, mixed enterprises and diverse production systems, having trained LLI officers are essential.

These representatives help ensure goat producers’ needs, realities and grassroots challenges are understood when decisions are being made in a response.

Until now, most LLI training has been delivered face‑to‑face and across multiple industries, limiting participation by goat producers.

The new GICA project will deliver goat‑specific, online training, making it accessible to producers anywhere in Australia.

This online session is designed for anyone in the goat supply chain and will introduce participants to the LLI role and how emergency responses work.

This could be producers, transporters, processors, agents or anyone interested in strengthening industry resilience during an EAD event.

Key topics include:

• How national response arrangements operate
• What happens in the first 72 hours of a response
• The role and responsibilities of an LLI
• The skills and attributes needed to represent the goat industry as an LLI
• How LLIs connect with GICA and government during a response

By joining the awareness webinar, you will:

• Build your understanding of how EAD responses work
• Learn how decisions are made and who makes them
• Understand how LLIs support communication between GICA and government
• Explore whether you’d like to take part in further goat‑specific training in 2027
