On-farm assurance programs

ISC manages and delivers the Australian red meat industry’s three key on-farm assurance and through-chain traceability programs:

Livestock Production Assurance (LPA)

LPA is the Australian red meat industry’s on-farm assurance program which covers on-farm management of food safety, animal welfare and biosecurity.

Being LPA-accredited means that the producer is exercising best practice for producing safe and ethically produced red meat on-farm and can provide the evidence to demonstrate this.

National Livestock Identification System

NLIS is Australia’s system for the identification and traceability of cattle, sheep and goats.

NLIS enhances Australia’s ability to track livestock during disease and food safety incidents. The traceability of red meat products provided by NLIS also serves to ensure consumer trust in the industry.

National Vendor Declarations

The NVD is a legal document that both guarantees the safety of red meat products and enables the traceability of those products along each link in the value chain.

The eNVD web-based system and eNVD mobile app are available for LPA accredited producers, feedlots and value chain stakeholders to use. Digital consignments are fast, easy and more accurate than paper forms, delivering time and efficiency savings.

An integrated integrity system

The two key elements of the integrity system – LPA and NLIS – work together to ensure Australian red meat is safe to eat and fully traceable. These elements are connected through:

LPA National Vendor Declarations (NVDs), a legal document which links traceability to on-farm assurance to certify the food safety of Australian red meat as it is transferred through the value chain
Property Identification Codes (PICs), which every livestock producing property must have to be registered with LPA or NLIS
farm record keeping, which is essential to ensure traceability and guarantee food
